Secrets and Credentials

Applies when

Code, configuration, logs, examples, fixtures, reports, or tooling handles credentials or sensitive authentication material.

Required action

  1. Use the project-approved secret store or environment mechanism.
  2. Keep secrets out of source, templates, command history, logs, reports, and fixtures.
  3. Redact diagnostics and use synthetic test values that cannot authenticate.
  4. If exposure is suspected, stop using the value, report it as compromised, and follow the project incident and rotation process.

Required evidence

Record the storage mechanism, redaction test, secret-scanning result when available, and rotation or incident reference for an exposure.

Exceptions

Public identifiers and deliberately non-secret test values must be clearly labelled; they must not resemble or reuse production credentials.
